What is airsoft?
-
Airsoft first originated in Japan in the early 1980s. This was during post-WWII where private citizens were restricted from owning real firearms. However, the restrictions never forbade the ownership of replica firearms. As a result, airsoft guns were openly sold in Japanese shops. Airsoft guns typically shoot a 6mm plastic BB. After airsoft guns become popularized in Japan, other countries were introduced to airsoft through exportation. As a result, airsoft guns became popular in a number of countries that include Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, the Philippines, the UK, Europe, and North America. Airsoft guns started out as spring powered guns, where they had to be cocked before each shot. Eventually Japan developed the guns further, and they evolved into fully automatic gas and battery powered airsoft weapons. As airsoft evolved, new and improved weapons continued to be released. They became more realistic and closer to their real steel counterparts. They also became more powerful and more accurate with new innovations, such as hop-up units and the use mosfets. Although the electric and gas airsoft guns are more expensive than their earlier spring counterparts, the growing popularity of airsoft continues to make airsoft guns more affordable. The airsoft guns of today are very sophisticated. They are popular among hobbyists, reenactors, and skirmish players, as well as law enforcement and government personnel who use them for training.
